WHAT IS IT?
It is the study from the exterior of the electrical activity of the heart.
HOW IT WORKS
The heart contracts because the electrical signals of its pace-making and conduction system extend in an orderly manner throughout the whole of same from the left auricle, making the muscle contract.
This signal produces a change in the electrical properties of the cardiac muscle, preamble to the contraction, which produces a “depolarisation wave”; like a continuous front of activity which, starting from the left auricle moves through to the tip of the heart.
.
WHY IT IS REQUESTED?
To study disorders in the electrical conduction of the heart, important in two fields:
Study of the alterations in cardiac conduction, such as in cardiac blockages
Diagnosis of ischemic lesions of the heart.
Without sufficient oxygen, the cardiac muscle presents an abnormal electrical signal, provoking a lesion, of an angina or infarction type.
WHEN HAVING THE TEST?
You must undress from the waist up, and electrodes will be placed on both ankles, which is why wearing “tights” is not recommended.
If you are very hairy, it is advisable that you shave your chest (otherwise it might have to be done in the surgery).
WHAT DOES THE EXAMINATION CONSIT OF?
A series of electrodes will be placed upon you (one on each extremity, usually held in place with clips, and six on the anterior and left side of the chest, roughly around the left breast, usually held in place with suction caps). In order to ensure the skin transmits a better signal it may be dampened with a paste or alcohol. Very occasionally a study is carried out with an oesophageal electrode, which is placed on the oesophagus inside the mouth.
Once the electrodes have been put into place, the recording begins, with the use of the apparatus. Normally, twelve lead combinations are studied, with so-called “standard”, increased and precordial derivations.
PROBLEMS
It is a completely passive system of electrical signal gathering, and therefore cannot be predictive.
DURATION OF TEST
A normal ECG takes around three minutes
PRECAUTIONS
Those generic to any examination.
No special measures are required.
Children and pregnant women: they can undergo the test without a problem, although its interpretation in children requires expert personnel.
